Contemplative Psychotherapy

"Not every truth arrives through thought, some arrive through stillness"

Contemplative psychotherapy is a hybrid therapeutic discipline that integrates the 2,500-year-old psychological insights and mindfulness practices of Buddhism with the clinical and developmental frameworks of Western psychology. Pioneered in the 1970s by Tibetan meditation master Chögyam Trungpa and psychiatrist Ed Podvoll, this approach shifts the therapeutic focus from "fixing" a pathology to uncovering a person’s intrinsic wholeness, and "arriving" at healing.

The foundational premise of contemplative psychotherapy is the concept of "brilliant sanity". This principle asserts that every human being possesses an innate, immutable wisdom, dignity, and clarity, regardless of how confused, traumatised, or distressed their current state of mind appears.

Contemplative psychotherapy at its core, invites you to develop a deeper relationship with your own mind and inner experience through the cultivation of pure awareness.

As a contemplative therapist, I am present and walk alongside you holding the space for your healing awareness to take shape. I act like the banks of a river, holding form while it flows.

What is mindfulness?

A state of observation without judgement and entanglement

Why does it heal?

Anchors us in the present, increasing neural plasticity and enabling the brain to unlearn and re-learn

How do I train to be mindful?

Invest in a daily practice of simple meditation. Create a watchful, still space

Mindfulness Based Contemplative Psychotherapy

Mindfulness-based contemplative psychotherapy at its core, invites you to develop a deeper relationship with your own mind and inner experience through the cultivation of pure awareness.

The witness state is profoundly healing because it creates space between you and your experience. Instead of being completely identified with your thoughts and emotions — as though they define who you are — you learn to watch them arise and pass. A painful memory, an anxious thought, a wave of grief: these are witnessed, held with compassion, and allowed to move through you without resistance. This shift alone can be transformative.

When you practice this witnessing awareness consistently, something remarkable happens. Old patterns that once felt solid and unchangeable begin to loosen. You realise you are not your anxiety, your trauma, or your self-doubt — you are the awareness in which all of this occurs. From this spacious perspective, healing naturally unfolds. The wounds don't disappear, but your relationship to them changes.
